Earthguardiansonline.com – The British-born media personality who once addressed Donald Trump as “Daddy” and led a widely mocked campus bus tour across American universities is now in federal immigration custody. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took him into detention on Thursday at a Louisiana airport, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Friday. As of Friday afternoon, the agency’s online detainee locator still listed him as held in ICE facilities.

The Immigration Violation

Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally in 2019, but DHS said he subsequently “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.” An Immigration Judge issued a final order of removal against him on July 22 after he failed to appear at a scheduled hearing. The agency stated plainly that he would remain in ICE custody pending removal from the country.

The timing of his detention drew immediate attention because of his own vocal advocacy for aggressive immigration enforcement. As recently as last year, he posted on X calling for ICE checkpoints inside California supermarkets and other public spaces, along with “on the spot deportation for anyone who can’t prove they are in the US legally.” Far-right influencer Laura Loomer, who has been locked in a public feud with Yiannopoulos, said on X Friday that she had reported him to both ICE and the FBI.

From Breitbart to Campus Provocation

Yiannopoulos was born in England and spent several years as an editor at Breitbart News before becoming one of the most recognizable faces in American conservative media. His rise to prominence tracked closely with Donald Trump’s ascent through national politics and eventual entry into the White House. He positioned himself as an enthusiastic champion of the president, occasionally using the familiar nickname “Daddy” in public remarks.

In a 2017 interview with CNN, he linked the energy he felt from his audiences to the broader conservative movement behind Trump’s campaign victory:

“People are tired of being told how to live, how to speak, what language they can use. The strength of feeling in my crowds, the enthusiasm for me from the audiences is the same – the same instinct, the same sort of motivating force (that) put Trump in the White House.”

His most visible public project came in 2017, when he launched a cross-country bus tour of college campuses that he branded the “Dangerous F*ggot” tour. He described the trip as an effort to promote free speech and carry his perspective into universities where, in his view, liberal viewpoints dominated classroom and campus conversation. The tour generated enormous public attention and, in many cases, loud protests at his appearances.

Most demonstrations remained peaceful, but his February 2017 visit to the University of California, Berkeley ended in cancellation after a large protest turned violent and destructive. Two Republican students were attacked during the incident, the university noted at the time. His disparaging remarks about Muslims, transgender people, and other groups drew sustained criticism from those who argued the language was designed to inflame campus tensions and should not have been given a platform by academic institutions.

A Shrinking Profile

Since those peak years, Yiannopoulos’s public profile has contracted considerably. In 2016, he was permanently banned from Twitter — now called X — after being identified as an instigator of online harassment directed at former Saturday Night Live comedian Leslie Jones. His account was later reinstated following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, and he had been posting as recently as Thursday evening.

In 2017, he faced intense scrutiny after comments appeared to condone pedophilia. He resigned from Breitbart amid the backlash, offering what was a rare public apology while insisting his remarks had been deceptively edited in context.

Yiannopoulos had previously identified as gay but in recent years stated he no longer does. Speaking to Tucker Carlson last year, he called “mainstreaming homosexuality in the Republican Party” the great regret of his life. His Telegram channel, which has carried no posts since at least January 2025, announced plans for a Florida clinic intended to help “men plagued by same-sex attraction.” He also described himself as a “retired civil rights icon.”

In June 2022, he posted on Telegram that he was serving as an unpaid intern to former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia. He also worked on the 2024 presidential campaign of Ye — the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, whose political standing collapsed after a series of antisemitic remarks. Yiannopoulos held the role of chief of staff on that campaign.

His current detention marks a sharp turn for a figure who spent years championing hardline immigration enforcement while himself remaining in the country beyond the terms of his original entry. Whether his removal will proceed on schedule, or whether legal challenges will intervene, remains to be seen.
