Memorial service tragedy – A somber memorial gathering turned into a maritime emergency on Tuesday afternoon when a pontoon boat carrying mostly family members began to sink in the waters off San Francisco. According to local authorities, the incident resulted in one fatality, while three individuals remained unaccounted for and sixteen others were successfully pulled from the cold bay. The vessel, which was transporting mourners, found itself in distress near the historic Alcatraz Island.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen provided details regarding the condition of the sunken craft upon arrival. Crews discovered a three-deck pontoon vessel that was nearly completely submerged beneath the surface. Despite being underwater, the boat’s motor remained operational and was actively leaking fuel into the surrounding water. By the time evening arrived, emergency responders had shifted their focus to the open ocean on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge to locate the missing passengers.

The extensive search operation involved a combination of divers, helicopters, and various rescue vessels. Officials indicated that this effort was projected to continue through the night. Initially, authorities reported that two people were missing, but this figure was later revised to three after receiving additional testimony from witnesses at the scene. The urgency of the situation was highlighted by Chief Crispen, who emphasized the ongoing nature of the rescue efforts.

“Right now we are in full rescue mode,” Crispen stated, noting that three individuals injured during the fall were transported to a medical facility and anticipated to leave by Tuesday evening.

Alcatraz Island, renowned for its history as a federal prison that seemed impossible to escape due to the powerful currents and freezing Pacific waters, has transformed into a popular tourist attraction. Situated approximately one mile north of the city’s shoreline within San Francisco Bay, the location is known for its frequently windy conditions, which often draw sailboats and other recreational craft to the area. Footage captured at the location revealed multiple vessels moving quickly to assist passengers who had entered the water, with objects floating around the largely submerged pontoon.

There was initial confusion regarding the cause of the distress. The boating mishap was first reported as a fire, but officials quickly clarified the situation.

The individual who lost their life had been retrieved from the frigid waters by rescue teams while still alive, but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries afterward. Tragically, a dog that was also onboard the vessel perished in the incident.

Aaron Anfinson, the captain of the Bass-Tub, shared his account with the San Francisco Chronicle. He explained that his boat was navigating toward the Golden Gate Bridge in what he described as “pretty windy, a little choppy” conditions when a man on a nearby smaller craft signaled for help. The man pointed toward a pontoon boat in the center of the bay that appeared to be engulfed in flames. By the time the Bass-Tub arrived, the flames had extinguished, but the pontoon was rapidly sinking.

Captain Anfinson noted that some passengers were already in the water while others remained on the deck. His crew worked to distribute life jackets to those aboard. One woman sustained a head injury, prompting Anfinson to prioritize her rescue.

“We figured we would get her first,” Anfinson said.

A deckhand lowered a swim ladder and tossed a life ring into the water to assist in pulling her aboard.

“It was scary,” Anfinson remarked. “I don’t want to see anybody in that situation.”
