Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and FBI Director Kash Patel are personally involved in tracking down individuals who provided information to news organizations. White House staff members were directed to hand over their mobile phones slightly more than a week ago. The New York Times, which first reported on the aircraft’s security problems, confirmed that four reporters received subpoenas as part of the investigation.
Aircraft Switched During NATO Return
Questions about the $400 million jet became more prominent earlier this month when Trump changed planes during his return from a NATO summit in Turkey. Instead of using the new aircraft, he ordered it sent to Mildenhall air base in England. At that moment, Trump downplayed the significance of the decision, claiming it gave American military personnel a chance to see the plane. Sources close to the situation told CNN that the newer aircraft lacked certain capabilities crucial for presidential safety during overseas trips. One source mentioned that the plane shared many features with the older model, while two others pointed out differences in security readiness.
Security Teams Prefer Older Aircraft
Officials speaking with CNN stated that security personnel have more confidence in the original aircraft, which was built with the president’s protection as a central priority. The Qatar-donated plane, despite being retrofitted for presidential use, has not generated the same level of trust among those tasked with ensuring the president’s safety. Nevertheless, Trump continues to fly on the newer aircraft for official trips while the upgrade work progresses.
