UK’s Royal Mint Honours the Spice Girls with Commemorative Coin for ‘Wannabe’ Anniversary
As the mid-1990s unfolded, the world was abuzz with a mix of cultural milestones. The sitcom Friends was nearing the end of its second season; the first Mission: Impossible movie made its debut in theaters; horror cinema found a fresh pulse with Scream’s release; and the Fugees’ cover of a popular track was making waves. Amid this backdrop, a group of five young women emerged with their debut single, ‘Wannabe,’ which would become a defining moment in music history. The track not only topped charts in 37 countries but also launched the Spice Girls into global superstardom, igniting the widespread frenzy dubbed “Spicemania.” This phenomenon, lasting approximately two years, reshaped the pop landscape and encapsulated the spirit of “Cool Britania.”
Three decades after the single’s release, the UK’s Royal Mint is commemorating the milestone with a special coin series. Designed by artist Ffion Rees, the £5 collectible coins feature the silhouettes of all five Spice Girls—Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell-Horner (Ginger Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). This marks a first for the Mint’s “Music Legends” collection, as it introduces five distinct packaging options for the uncirculated color versions of the coins. Each design is limited to 15,000 units globally, making them highly sought after by fans and collectors.
“Lucy Mackenzie, director of digital and product concept at the Royal Mint, stated: ‘The Spice Girls didn’t just dominate pop music—they defined the 90s.’ She added, ‘Now, fans and collectors can own a tangible piece of that legacy. The unique packaging celebrating each Spice Girl makes this one of our most collectable releases in the Music Legends series.’”
The band reflected on the honor in a statement: “It’s a huge privilege to be celebrated by the Royal Mint, joining the ranks of music icons like Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Dame Shirley Bassey, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. 2026 is a significant year for us as we mark the 30th anniversary of our debut single and album. We never anticipated being recognized in such a remarkable way—being the first female group to receive a dedicated coin is an unforgettable moment for Girl Power.”
Other notable figures in the Royal Mint’s ongoing Music Legends coin series include Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Dame Shirley Bassey, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. The collection, available for purchase starting 3 March, ranges in price from £18.50 (€21) to £10,535 (€12,000) for a 2oz gold proof coin priced at £200. This celebration of a cultural era through numismatics offers a lasting tribute to the Spice Girls’ enduring influence.
