Their survey of over 1,300 participants aged thirteen to seventeen shows that nearly three-quarters have encountered online pornography. Even more striking, more than half of these young people report seeing such material as early as age twelve.
How AI-Generated Content Differs from Traditional Media
While exposure rates to sexual content have remained fairly consistent since the organization’s 2023 report, the type of content has transformed dramatically. Nearly half of surveyed adolescents said they had viewed sexual material they believed was created by artificial intelligence. These AI-generated pieces include fabricated nude photographs, videos, deepfake outputs, and content from nudification apps that produce convincing images of people in various states of undress.
Dr. Supreet Mann, Common Sense Media’s research director who led this study, highlighted what sets this phenomenon apart.
That’s what I really think makes this notably distinct. We’re talking about things that are removing the agency and stripping people of their ability to control their image.
Unlike conventional pornography, AI-generated content offers remarkable manipulation capabilities. While celebrities often appear in AI-created sexual images, nudification tools have extended this to everyday people. About twenty percent of respondents either made AI sexual content themselves or knew someone who had. Additionally, more than half of these cases involved individuals the teens personally knew.
Access and Oversight Issues
Easy access to these applications represents another important concern. Nudification apps are available through straightforward app store downloads. Among the forty-four percent of teens who viewed AI-generated sexual content, fifteen percent found it through dedicated AI applications. Despite existing app store regulations, these applications sometimes evade oversight by not fully disclosing their functions.
Riana Pfefferkorn, a policy fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence who did not participate in the research, addressed this persistent issue.
There’s plenty of research showing that the whack-a-mole job that app stores and social media platforms are doing hasn’t really been enough to keep up.
Effects on Teen Development and Social Media Habits
Many adolescents are rethinking their social media presence due to AI-generated sexual content. Nearly seventy percent expressed worry about becoming targets of non-consensual AI sexual imagery. Consequently, numerous teens are implementing protective strategies like monitoring their posts more closely, making accounts private, or removing their online presence entirely.
Dr. Mann pointed out that while this self-protection is beneficial, it might unintentionally strengthen victim-blaming perspectives.
Why is the burden on the young people to be changing their own behaviors because of fear of other people’s actions?
Beyond behavioral adjustments, this content shapes how teenagers view core aspects of their growth. Around seventy percent believe AI-generated sexual material influences their understanding of ideal body appearance. This concern matters especially during adolescence, a time of rapid physical change.

Supporting Families Through This Transition
Despite these challenges, many adolescents want adult guidance. More than one-third of teens said they would appreciate conversations about AI-generated sexual content but felt unsure about starting such talks. Common Sense Media suggests parents and guardians initiate these discussions by emphasizing consent, health, and sexual identity. Building these foundational topics creates a solid framework before addressing more complex issues. More teens are using generative AI, making parental awareness increasingly essential for navigating this new digital landscape safely.
