New Nintendo Switch 2 console model to be released only in Europe claims report
New Nintendo Switch 2 Console Model Set for European Launch, Per Report
A report suggests that Nintendo is preparing to introduce a new Switch 2 console model, primarily in response to EU regulations. This change aims to align with right-to-repair mandates, which require manufacturers to make devices easier to service.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for nearly a year, and while some fans await the upcoming Lite variant, Nintendo may unveil another iteration ahead of that.
The new revision is linked to European Union legislation, which was introduced in July 2023 as part of a broader effort to reduce electronic waste. The law mandates that all consumer electronics sold in the EU must feature replaceable batteries by 2027, prompting Nintendo to adjust its design.
Although the modification is expected to target Europe specifically, analysts speculate the company could apply similar changes to global markets if demand for repairability grows. The updated console might hit shelves before the year’s end, potentially reshaping the product lineup.
Notably, the UK, though not part of the EU, will likely receive the revised model due to shared console and game availability. However, the original Switch remains unaffected, as its battery is enclosed within the shell and requires specialized tools for replacement.
Curiously, a Japanese-only version of the Switch 2 already exists, priced at around £235. This model was created to offset the yen’s current depreciation. If Nintendo introduces a European edition, it could result in three distinct variants worldwide, raising questions about regional strategy.
Meanwhile, the Switch 2 continues to dominate sales, though its momentum has eased in recent months. Nintendo has not officially confirmed the revision, leaving the details open to interpretation. Nonetheless, the EU law’s implementation is certain, highlighting potential gaps in earlier planning.
