Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect

Balamory Revived: Miss Hoolie and PC Plum Return with Fresh Stories

A Nostalgic Comeback for a Beloved Series

For Julie Wilson Nimmo, known as Miss Hoolie, the question “What’s the story in Balamory?” is one that’s been asked for over two decades. The iconic character, who first graced screens in the 2000s, reflects on the show’s lasting impact: “People have been saying that to me for 20-odd years, practically every day.” The series, which centered on a vibrant fictional island community where friendship and fun resolved everyday challenges, has become a cherished memory for millions. After more than 20 years since its finale on CBeebies, the show is set to return this month, with original stars reprising their roles.

Revival Amid Challenges for UK Children’s Programming

The renewed series arrives a month after a BBC report raised alarms about the shrinking production of UK-made children’s content. With the sector facing financial strain and dwindling investment from both public and commercial broadcasters, Balamory’s return feels like a significant milestone. Wilson Nimmo and Agnew, who portrayed Miss Hoolie and PC Plum, hope the show’s warm familiarity will captivate a new generation. “It’s come at the perfect time,” Wilson Nimmo notes. “Children are surrounded by animation now, which is great, but it’s rare to find a show where kids watch other kids on TV.”

Emotional Reunion and Nostalgic Memories

The cast’s first glimpse of the revival scripts was a heartfelt moment. “I was pretty emotional because we were seeing the scripts for the first time,” Wilson Nimmo recalls. “They played some of the songs, and the nostalgia buzz was real.” Agnew adds that the music, a cornerstone of the original series, remains deeply ingrained in their lives. “People come up to me and sing my song at me,” he jokes. “That’s lovely, and I wouldn’t change that for the world, but it doesn’t go away.”

Returning Stars and New Faces

Among the familiar figures, Penny Pocket—the shopkeeper—and Edie McCredie—the delivery driver—are set to reappear. Agnew highlights PC Plum’s enduring role: “The island would not be the same without him. He’s still bumbling, still a wee bit getting the wrong end of the stick quite a lot.” Meanwhile, new characters are introduced, including Dr Ollie (Carl Spencer), a vet with his two children, and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews). While Miles Jupp, who played inventor Archie, is not returning, Ava Potts (Danielle Jam) steps into his shoes as the latest island innovator.

Modernizing the Magic

Despite the update, the show retains its core charm. “There’s new songs as well and new takes on the songs because they’ve been revamped a wee bit to modernise them,” Agnew says. Wilson Nimmo confirms the original cast’s deep connection to the material: “We didn’t need refresher sessions to remember the lyrics. They were a defining part of the original series.”

Balamory is broadcast on CBeebies on Monday 20th April, with all 10 episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day. The revival, produced by Lion Television Scotland, promises to honor the past while embracing fresh narratives for its loyal audience.
