Tragedy off Boulogne coast prompts emergency response
Authorities in northern France confirmed four fatalities following a maritime incident involving a taxi boat. The vessel sank near Boulogne, between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais, according to a statement from local officials. Rescue teams are actively working to recover survivors, with approximately 30 individuals currently receiving medical attention.
“A taxi boat sank today. The situation is still being assessed and remains subject to change,” said French officials in Calais, as reported by Reuters.
Emergency services, including firefighters and intensive care units, arrived at the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST). A press conference is set to address details of the incident shortly. The event occurred amid recent calm weather in the English Channel, which has seen a rise in crossings during the summer months.
Over the past three years, more than 41,472 people reached the UK via small boats in 2025. In the first three months of 2026, 4,441 individuals crossed the Channel from France, a 33% decline compared to the 6,642 recorded in the same period in 2025. Officials suggest weather conditions may have influenced this trend, as the Channel experienced rougher seas during the earlier months of 2025.
