Melania Trump’s speech propels Epstein crisis back to forefront
On Thursday, as Melania Trump approached the White House podium, few anticipated the dramatic shift in focus her remarks would bring. Her address, delivered in a space recently used by President Donald Trump for a speech on Iran, initially seemed routine. Yet, within moments, the topic of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes dominated headlines, reigniting public debate. Officials noted that even the administration’s most informed insiders were unaware of the subject beforehand.
Flanked by American flags, the first lady’s first sentence stunned the audience. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” she declared. This statement thrust the Epstein scandal into the national spotlight once more, with her wife now at its center. Cable networks abandoned coverage of Iran, prioritizing her remarks as the most pressing development.
Melania has typically maintained a low public profile, carefully choosing when to speak. Her husband, known for his flair for drama, often seeks headlines, while she has relied on strategic silence. This time, however, she took the mic, reading from a prepared statement. She asserted she had no relationship with Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell, was not introduced to her spouse by the financier, and had no knowledge of his crimes.
She concluded by urging congressional hearings to allow Epstein survivors to share their accounts. The question lingered: why now? Survivors speculated that her timing might signal a new direction, given the claims she referenced had been circulating for years. Investigative journalist Vicky Ward, who has chronicled Epstein’s case for decades, called the press conference’s timing “confusing.”
“If Melania Trump had addressed this at the start of the Epstein crisis—a year ago—people would have felt differently about her role,” Ward remarked. “There’s not much of her in the Epstein files beyond that one email to Ghislaine Maxwell. I’m baffled by it. No one ever believed she was a victim.”
President Donald Trump reportedly didn’t know his wife’s statement was coming, despite a spokesperson initially claiming he did. This contradiction added to the intrigue. Survivors reacted quickly, expressing disbelief and coordinating their responses. Thirteen individuals, including Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s family, issued a joint statement.
“Melania Trump is shifting the burden onto survivors under politicized conditions that shield those in power,” the statement read. “The Department of Justice, law enforcement, and the Trump Administration have yet to fully comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act.”
Marina Lacerda, a 14-year-old victim detailed in the 2019 federal indictment, criticized the first lady’s remarks in a social media video. “It sounds like you’re trying to redirect attention from one issue to another,” she said. “How does this help the Trump family?”
Meanwhile, survivor Lisa Phillips praised Melania for challenging the Department of Justice’s narrative that the Epstein case was nearing closure. “Calling for survivors to speak out is a bold move,” Phillips told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “But I’d challenge her to back it up with action. What can you do now to support us?”
