The United States recently struck Kharg Island, a modest rock formation just 15 nautical miles from Iran’s coastline, focusing on its military assets while sparing its oil facilities. President Donald Trump emphasized that the operation had “completely eliminated all military installations” on the island, though he refrained from destroying the oil infrastructure. This decision, he stated, was made to avoid “harming the economic lifeline” of Iran, which relies heavily on the island’s terminal for its energy exports.
Kharg Island serves as a crucial hub for Iran’s oil industry. Nearly 90% of the nation’s crude oil is funneled through its terminal, connected to the mainland via pipelines. The island’s deep-water access allows massive tankers—capable of carrying 85 million gallons—to dock directly, facilitating exports to China, Iran’s primary buyer. The terminal not only supports the country’s economy but also funds the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), making it a strategic asset.
Trump’s Strategy and Iranian Response
Trump asserted that the attack demonstrated “mercy” toward Iran’s oil infrastructure, while signaling readiness to strike harder if the country disrupts shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that over 90 military targets were hit, including mine depots and missile bunkers. However, Iranian state media claimed the oil facilities remained untouched, with semi-official outlets noting damage to air defenses, a naval base, and a helicopter hangar.
“No casualties were reported among military personnel, oil workers, or island residents. Oil exports are proceeding as normal,” stated Ehsan Jahanian, the political deputy of Bushehr province’s governor, citing IRGC-linked reports.
Despite the U.S. restraint, Iran warned of retaliation. Its military declared that any assault on the island’s infrastructure would trigger the “immediate destruction” of oil and energy assets linked to U.S. partners. Such an attack could cripple Iran’s economy and escalate tensions, potentially prompting targeted strikes on regional infrastructure like desalination plants.

Military analysts suggest the operation aimed to pressure Iran into scaling back its aggressive actions.
