Iranian and Romanian charged after allegedly trying to enter UK nuclear naval base

Two individuals, an Iranian man aged 34 and a Romanian woman aged 31, have been charged following claims they attempted to access a UK nuclear naval base. The incident, which occurred near the west coast of Scotland, involved efforts to breach the secure premises of Faslane. Police Scotland reported the attempt around 5pm on Thursday, with the suspects detained the following day.

The pair is scheduled to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, as per the statement from the police force, which noted that investigations are still in progress. Faslane, located on the Gare Loch, serves as a critical hub for the UK’s nuclear capabilities, housing the Trident deterrent system and a significant portion of the attack submarine fleet.

The case has drawn attention to ongoing tensions, with recent reports suggesting potential threats to other military installations. While details remain scarce, the incident highlights increased security scrutiny at strategic locations.

Arrests linked to nuclear base intrusion

A Royal Navy spokesperson confirmed the arrest of two individuals who “unsuccessfully attempted to enter HM Naval Base Clyde [Faslane] on Thursday 19 March.” The statement emphasized that the force would not provide further details until the inquiry concludes.

“Faslane is probably Britain’s most important single installation,” said Sky’s defense and security analyst Michael Clarke. “We have seven attack submarines. And if they’re all out of maintenance, then this is where they operate from.”
