He spent three weeks in Georgia before heading to Florida’s east coast to enjoy the beaches, Jeffers explained on Tuesday.

Yezzika Alamilla, Coronilla Durán’s wife, informed Jeffers that her husband had been visiting the United States on a tourist visa. The Department of Homeland Security had not yet responded to inquiries about whether his visa was valid at the time of the incident. Susana Guerra Vallejo, the undersecretary for assistance to migrants and mobility issues for Guanajuato, also confirmed that Coronilla Durán had been in the United States for only a brief period and held a tourist visa.

Family Left Behind and Ongoing Support

Alamilla contacted Colectivo Arbol, which offers legal advice and assistance to farmworkers in Central Florida, the day following her husband’s death. She was seeking help to travel from Mexico and repatriate her husband’s remains. The organization purchased a plane ticket for her and provided accommodation for three days until Monday, according to Alamilla. The Mexican consulate has been assisting her since that initial contact.

Jeffers shared that Alamilla believes her husband was frightened and that fear prompted him to run. “His wife said he was there on a tourist visa. She didn’t understand what was happening,” Jeffers said. “He didn’t come to work; he wasn’t working. He was here as a tourist.” Alamilla will soon be able to see her husband’s body at a Florida funeral home before his remains are transported to Mexico on a commercial flight from Orlando, Guerra Vallejo told The Associated Press.
