Emergency Services Respond to Major Train Derailment Near Lewes

The Southern Rail service was traveling from London Victoria toward Eastbourne when the last three carriages left the tracks. Passengers Describe Terrifying Experience

Yana Ludwig, a 56-year-old American visitor, recounted the sudden chaos aboard the train. She was traveling from London to Lewes when the incident occurred.

There was a banging. Everything just went topsy turvy. It seemed like a really long time but it probably was 10 seconds of that before the carriage actually fell on the side.

Ludwig described being propped up over another passenger during the overturning. She noted that travelers checked on one another while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. She added that she was “pretty banged up” following the incident.

Passengers who did not require hospital treatment were transported to a nearby community center for additional support and care. The South East Coast Ambulance Service reported that two individuals sustained serious injuries, while sixteen others with less severe injuries were taken to hospitals for further medical attention.

Extensive Emergency Response Deployed

Aerial footage captured dozens of first responders working around the derailed train, surrounded by emergency vehicles. Three air ambulances were positioned on the ground nearby as rescue operations continued. Drummond-Smith confirmed that all passengers had been safely evacuated from the train.

The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service coordinated efforts with other emergency organizations at the scene. Officials advised the public to avoid the area while operations continued.

McAuliffe acknowledged that passengers and the public would have numerous questions about the incident. She emphasized that investigators were working closely with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to determine precisely what occurred. She noted that commenting on the cause would be premature at this stage, with more information expected soon.

Heatwave Complicates Rail Operations

The derailment occurred during an ongoing heatwave across the United Kingdom, which has already disrupted several train services. Some routes were canceled entirely, while others operated at reduced speeds due to extreme temperatures. On Thursday, portions of southern England experienced temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius, equivalent to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Network Rail has previously warned that elevated temperatures can cause steel rails to expand and potentially buckle. The organization explained on its website that when steel heats up, it expands. If insufficient space exists for the rail to expand, buckling can occur, necessitating line closures until repairs are completed.

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern regarding the derailment and thanked emergency responders for their efforts. She confirmed that government officials were collaborating rapidly with the rail industry and local partners to assist affected passengers.

The TSSA transport union also voiced its concerns about the incident.
