Earthguardiansonline.com – Federal investigators carried out a search warrant early Monday at the Washington-area residence of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat seeking reelection as voting continues ahead of the midterm elections.

The Justice Department said Homeland Security Investigations personnel conducted the search under a warrant approved by a judge. The agency described the operation as part of an active federal criminal investigation but did not disclose its subject or identify any alleged wrongdoing.

“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” a Justice Department spokesperson said.

The timing has drawn particular attention because Omar is a candidate in an election that is less than a month away. More than 127,000 Minnesotans had already cast ballots, based on state election data, when agents executed the warrant. Searches involving elected officials or candidates so close to an election are unusual and can prompt concerns about public confidence in the electoral process, even when investigators have not publicly detailed the basis for their actions.

Omar Calls Search an Act of Political Intimidation

Omar responded publicly by saying she was safe and portraying the search as part of a longstanding campaign against her by President Donald Trump.

“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”

A spokesperson for Omar said the congresswoman had done nothing wrong and pointed to years of inflammatory language directed at her.

“For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back … The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong.”

Later Monday, Trump criticized Omar while denying that he had any role in the federal search.

“I understand they’re looking at her very carefully – I’ve always found her to be a totally crooked person,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

“I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ, I have nothing to do with it,” he said.

Democratic Leaders Raise Questions About Timing

Top House Democrats condemned the operation and said it created serious concerns, particularly because it came during an active election period. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and caucus Chair Pete Aguilar said Omar has faced years of personal attacks and unsupported accusations from Trump and far-right figures.

“For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations,” the Democratic leaders said, describing the search as occurring with “less than 30 days until the midterm election.”

The Justice Department has not said whether Omar herself is the focus of the investigation, what conduct investigators are examining, or whether anyone has been charged. A search warrant permits authorities to collect material described in the warrant, but it does not itself establish criminal liability.

Administration officials had previously indicated that issues involving Omar were being examined. White House border czar Tom Homan said last month that “things are going on” involving the congresswoman, though he declined to provide details. On Monday morning, Homan confirmed that the warrant had been served but said he would not discuss the underlying investigation.

“The specifics of the investigation, I think I need to turn that over to Todd Blanche or Markwayne Mullin,” Homan said, referring to the attorney general and DHS secretary. “I don’t want to get ahead of them commenting on an ongoing investigation.”

Early-Morning Operation at the Residence

A neighbor said the activity began around 4:30 a.m., with banging heard at doors. Homeland Security Investigations officers later surrounded the home while investigators removed boxes from the property. Before departing, officials used a camera to record the home’s condition.

Homeland Security Investigations is part of the Department of Homeland Security and handles criminal investigations. The Justice Department’s statement made clear that the warrant had judicial authorization, while leaving the public without an explanation of the evidence presented to obtain it.

A Prominent and Frequent Political Target

Omar was born in Somalia during the country’s civil war, came to the United States as a teenager after fleeing the conflict, and later became a US citizen. She won election to Congress in 2018 and became associated with “The Squad,” a group of women of color in Congress known for advocating progressive policies.

Since entering national politics, Omar has repeatedly faced racist attacks and sharp criticism from Trump. He called her “garbage” last year and said Somalis should “go back to where they came from.” Her Minnesota district was also the focus of a broad immigration-enforcement campaign earlier this year, an effort that led to violent confrontations involving protesters and immigration authorities.

For now, the federal investigation remains largely undisclosed. The search has intensified an already volatile political dispute, with Omar and Democratic leaders alleging political retaliation while the administration maintains that the Justice Department is handling an ongoing criminal matter independently.
