Mother speaks out after son fell to his death in high-rise railing incident
Mother Condemns Tragic High-Rise Railing Collapse That Killed Her Son
Family Campaign Calls for Mandatory Safety Measures
Fiona Garrett, the mother of 23-year-old Joshua Robbins, has emphasized that the railing incident which led to her son’s fatal fall could have affected anyone. Her comments underscore the need for improved safety in high-rise buildings.
“This catastrophic incident should never have occurred, and it was entirely preventable,” said Fiona. She noted that her son’s father was “deeply traumatised” and grappling with “survivor’s guilt” after the accident.
The incident took place on January 29, when police were summoned to Holland and Thurston Dwellings in Holborn, London, shortly before 8:30pm. Joshua had fallen from a communal landing outside his father’s flat after leaning on a railing to check if the delivered pizza was ready.
Community and Family Response
Despite rapid response from paramedics, Joshua was declared dead due to injuries incompatible with survival. Fiona highlighted the emotional toll on her family, stressing that her son’s death must “mean something” and prompt tangible change.
“Joshua simply put his elbow on the communal railings by the lift, and then the railing gave way,” she recounted. “He was giving instructions when he slipped five floors to his death.”
A campaign, No More Falls, initiated by the family, is advocating for mandatory safety standards in buildings with similar railings or balcony structures. Fiona expressed her desire for “actual action” rather than superficial reassurances.
Prime Minister’s Involvement and Housing Association Actions
The tragedy occurred in the constituency of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who responded with a message Fiona described as “really personal and genuine.” However, she insisted, “I don’t need platitudes—I need someone to actually grasp this.”
Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the site, issued a statement to Sky News. Pippa Fleetwood-Read, the organization’s chief executive, stated: “Joshua’s death has deeply affected everyone who knew him. We offer our heartfelt condolences and are committed to supporting residents through counselling, daily on-site presence, and weekly updates.”
Police Investigation Continues
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the investigation is in its early stages, involving collaboration with expert witnesses and interviews with witnesses. A coroner’s report will follow once the police inquiry concludes, with the family kept informed throughout.
Fiona reiterated her call for “real action,” urging that the incident not be dismissed with vague statements. “Joshua’s life mattered, so his death matters even more,” she asserted, emphasizing the importance of accountability and proactive measures to prevent future tragedies.
