Ex-footballer Barton denies attack at golf club
Joey Barton Denies Assault at Merseyside Golf Club
Joey Barton, a former professional footballer, has rejected allegations of attacking a man at a golf club in Merseyside. He was denied bail during an earlier magistrates’ court session and appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from Liverpool Prison for a plea and trial preparation hearing. Barton, 43, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, a former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy, during an incident at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March.
The defendants were reportedly consuming alcohol with Lynch before the alleged altercation. Lynch sustained severe eye injuries during the attack, according to court details. Gary O’Grady, 50, also appeared in court but did not yet enter a plea. Barton faces a seven-day trial starting 1 September, with further remand in custody.
A midfielder who once represented England, Barton played for Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille during his career. He also managed Fleetwood Town. The case against him and O’Grady continues as they prepare for the upcoming court proceedings.
