Health misinformation is on the rise, compounding the challenges patients face. The study’s authors recommend identifying red flags, such as overly technical language or vague instructions, to help individuals recognize when they need to seek clarification. For example, if a label uses terms like “as needed” without defining the context, patients might assume it applies to all situations, leading to incorrect usage.

Vogeley concluded that the findings are a call to action for the healthcare industry. “We can’t just say, ‘good luck’ and leave patients to figure things out on their own,” she said. “Improving health literacy is about giving patients the tools they need to make informed decisions and avoid preventable errors.” This approach not only enhances patient safety but also reduces the burden on healthcare providers, fostering a more efficient and effective system.
