ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Man During Houston Traffic Stop, Investigation Underway
ICE officer fatally shoots man while – A federal immigration enforcement officer has been involved in a fatal shooting while attempting to conduct a routine traffic stop in Houston, Texas. According to an official statement released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the incident occurred on Tuesday when agents tried to apprehend Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who had been residing in the United States without proper legal documentation. The agency reported that officers attempted to perform a traffic stop and make an arrest of Salgado Araujo. During the encounter, the man allegedly ignored multiple verbal commands issued by law enforcement personnel. In what the agency described as an escalating situation, Salgado Araujo reportedly drove his vehicle into one of the ICE law enforcement vehicles present at the scene.
“Weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,” the agency’s statement explained regarding the sequence of events. Following the shooting, Salgado Araujo was transported to a nearby medical facility where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigation and Community Response
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General has taken the lead in investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Additionally, the FBI’s Houston field office is examining whether a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer occurred during the incident. CNN has contacted both the DHS-OIG and the FBI Houston office to obtain further details about the ongoing investigation. This Tuesday’s shooting marks the second time an ICE officer has been involved in a fatal shooting within less than a week. The incident arrives during a period of heightened immigration enforcement activities, which have been accelerated by President Donald Trump’s comprehensive deportation initiative.
“We demand a full, independent investigation, the immediate release of all available evidence, and accountability for the wrongful death of Lorenzo. The public deserves the truth, and the Salgado family deserves justice,” the League of United Latin American Citizens declared in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia, whose congressional district encompasses the area where the incident took place, emphasized the need for thorough examination. Speaking on social media platform X, she stated that “ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force.” Representative Garcia further noted that “all available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation.” Rep. Christian Menefee, who also represents portions of Houston, echoed these sentiments by asserting that all information gathered through the investigation must be made accessible to the public. “ICE’s actions across the country have caused them to lose the faith and confidence of communities,” he remarked on X.
The Salgado Family Speaks
Ronaldo Salgado, the son of the deceased man, addressed the public through Facebook following his father’s death. He described Salgado Araujo as a “hardworking Mexican man” who earned his living in the construction industry to support his wife and three children.
Having lived in the United States for nearly three and a half decades, Salgado Araujo “was in the process of obtaining his work permit through the legal process,” his son explained. Ronaldo Salgado added that his father “was on his way to work, picking up his workers” at the time of the incident.
“My father did not deserve this,” Ronaldo Salgado concluded in his statement. He is scheduled to hold a news conference on Wednesday to address the media and community members. CNN has also contacted Houston Mayor John Whitmire and the Houston Police Department to request their comments on the incident.
Pattern of Similar Incidents
Over the past year, several immigration enforcement operations across the United States have ended in fatalities. In many cases, initial descriptions provided by authorities regarding clashes between agents and suspects were later contradicted by video evidence that emerged. Last year, a federal agent shot and killed 23-year-old Ruben Ray Martinez, a United States citizen, during a traffic encounter. The Department of Homeland Security claimed the shooting was in response to the driver’s attempted run over of a fellow agent. However, footage of the encounter did not clearly show the vehicle striking the agent. In January, a Texas grand jury rejected indictments in the fatal shooting of US citizen Renee Good by a federal immigration agent. The 37-year-old was shot in the head during a crackdown in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security again claimed that Good was attempting to hit the agent with her vehicle, a claim that local officials and witnesses disputed. In May, a former federal agent was arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault and falsely reporting a crime. The charges followed revelations that the agent had made false statements under oath regarding the nonfatal shooting of a Venezuelan man in Minneapolis in January.
