Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven Individuals Detained at RAF Base During Peace Protests
Suffolk Police reported the arrest of seven people on Sunday at an RAF airbase, alleging their support for the proscribed group Palestine Action. The detainees included five men and two women, who were taken into custody outside the main entrance of Lakenheath airbase during a demonstration against the Iran conflict. The protest followed media claims that a US fighter jet downed in Iran had been stationed at the base.
Arrests Linked to Proscribed Organisation
“The individuals were detained on suspicion of backing a proscribed group,” stated a spokesperson for Suffolk Police. “They are now at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry.” The statement emphasized the force’s commitment to enforcing the law impartially, noting that actions are based on current circumstances rather than potential future outcomes.
Meanwhile, the High Court had previously ruled in February that the ban on Palestine Action was unlawful, yet it permitted the Home Office to challenge the decision. This means the group remains under proscription until the appeal concludes. The recent arrests were part of a six-day peace camp that included a continuous vigil at the airbase, set to conclude on Monday.
Suffolk Police also confirmed two protesters faced charges of wilfully blocking the highway after a demonstration on Saturday. The Lakenheath Alliance For Peace noted the arrests occurred following a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the crowd.
