A Summer of Converging Crises: Climate Change Arrives Early

For the second occasion within four years, Canadian wildfire smoke has painted the skies in an unsettling sepia hue. Even hundreds of miles away from the actual blazes, the air carried a distinct smoky scent. Sunsets took on an otherworldly crimson quality, while midday sunlight struggled to pierce through the thick pollution blanketing cities like Boston, New York, and Washington.
Midwestern metropolitan areas faced equally severe conditions. Chicago and Detroit ranked among the worst locations globally for air quality. During one particular week, at least 120 million residents spanning from Minnesota to Massachusetts received air quality alerts triggered by the drifting wildfire smoke. Scientists have cautioned for decades about the devastating outcomes of climate change, typically presenting their findings through studies projecting scenarios for distant years like 2050 and 2100. This current summer demonstrates that we need not wait for the future to experience climate change’s direct impact.
Multiple Disasters, One Season
From scorching heat waves to catastrophic flash floods, alongside raging wildfires and their accompanying acrid smoke, evidence surrounds us daily. The recent disasters illustrate what global warming truly resembles: one calamity stacking upon another, all unfolding nearly simultaneously. “Climate change is a present threat, and it will become even harder to ignore as the impacts grow,” explained Zachary Labe, a climate scientist affiliated with Climate Central, a nonprofit research organization. “The burning of fossil fuels is already having a clear and significant impact on communities, and we do not have to wait until 2050 or 2100 to see the consequences.”
Summer once represented a carefree period for vacations and camping across the United States. Today, a distinct smoke season accompanies what appears to be a nearly year-round wildfire season in the American West and portions of Canada. This transformation occurs alongside rising average temperatures and forests that have become increasingly vulnerable to ignition from both lightning strikes and human activities. The extreme weather and climate events documented so far this summer resemble an exaggerated disaster movie script, except this scenario unfolds in reality.
Record-Breaking Extremes Across Continents
Several regions within Texas continue recovering from flash flooding following a devastating rainfall event classified as occurring once every thousand years. This marks the second such occurrence within merely two years. Under typical conditions, these extreme rainfall events carry only a 0.1% probability of happening in any given year. However, extreme rainfall is growing more frequent as planet-warming pollution elevates temperatures, since warmer air retains greater moisture capacity. In certain sections of the Texas Hill Country, nearly a full year’s precipitation accumulated within a single week, generating dangerous flood waves that swept through previously dry terrain. Rivers and streams swelled to near-record levels, trapping numerous residents inside their homes.
Simultaneously, hundreds of millions of people across the United States and Europe endured relentless heat domes that produced thousands of excess fatalities in Europe alone. These expansive regions of intense high pressure function like atmospheric lids, trapping heat beneath while suppressing clouds and precipitation through descending air. In Western Europe, consecutive heat domes throughout May, June, and July transformed lush landscapes into tinderboxes, with deadly wildfires sweeping across Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and other nations where such fires were previously uncommon. Water shortages are beginning to appear in the Netherlands and may soon emerge in other regions.
America’s recent heat waves shattered numerous all-time, monthly, and daily high temperature records, as well as overnight minimum temperature records, with some margins being substantial. Thermometers in traditionally cooler states like Montana and Minnesota recorded temperatures so elevated that they exceeded longstanding all-time records, with triple-digit highs in mid-July reaching as far north as the Canadian border. Portions of Montana experienced temperatures climbing into the 110s.
Scientists long ago sounded the alarm that when climate disasters come, they won’t necessarily happen one at a time. Instead, there would be an uptick in compound disasters, as one extreme piles upon another.
That prediction has materialized precisely this summer. “These overlapping hazards can lead to greater economic losses, more serious health impacts, added stress on infrastructure, and further damage to ecosystems,” noted Labe from Climate Central. The convergence of heat, flooding, wildfires, and resulting smoke represents exactly the compound disaster scenario scientists anticipated.
