Police Probe Hate Crime Motive Following Double Stabbing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side

The incidents took place in broad daylight on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, drawing significant attention from both witnesses and community members. According to police reports, two men were targeted in separate but related attacks within close proximity to one another.
Victim Profiles and Attack Details
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided important details about the victims during her initial briefing. She identified one victim as an Asian man and the other as a Jewish man. Both individuals were described as being stabbed “throughout” their bodies, with injuries ranging from their backs to their chests. The victims, aged 57 and 50 respectively, were both transferred to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital where they remain in stable condition and are expected to survive their injuries.
Witness accounts and victim statements indicate that the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” during both incidents. This detail has led investigators to consider whether religious or ethnic animosity may have played a role in the attacks. The initial investigation also suggests that mental health considerations could be a contributing factor in the stabbings.
Suspect in Custody
Police have identified and taken into custody the suspect, 51-year-old Raul Morales. An investigation into his potential motive is currently underway. Commissioner Tisch noted that at this time, there is no known connection between Morales and either of the victims, nor is there a known link between the two victims themselves. This lack of prior relationship supports the theory that the attacks may have been random or motivated by external factors rather than personal grievances.
Both stabbings occurred within a small geographic area. One incident took place at the intersection of West 84th Street and Central Park West, while the second happened just a few blocks away near West 86th Street and Central Park West. Police received a 911 call shortly after 1:30 p.m. and arrived to find the first victim conscious and alert with a stab wound to his back.
Community Response and Witness Accounts
The attacks drew immediate responses from local community organizations. Volunteers with Shomrim, a Jewish civilian neighborhood watch group, responded to a call on their hotline and arrived at the scene following one of the stabbings. Michael Jacobs, a Shomrim volunteer, told CNN that the victim they encountered was wearing a yarmulke, the traditional skullcap worn by many Jewish men. Jacobs noted that the victim appeared to be either traveling to or returning from synagogue at the time of the attack.
“He’s a respected person in the neighborhood, minding his own business, just going to pray,” Jacobs said, highlighting that the attack occurred on Tisha B’Av, a significant Jewish day of mourning and fasting.
Marianna Ellenberg, another witness to the events, described a harrowing scene. She recalled seeing “a man kneeling on the street with a knife just sticking out of his back, like a movie.” Ellenberg, who had experienced robbery herself, expressed shock at the brutality of the attack occurring in bright afternoon sunlight. “It just kind of reminds you this idea of your safety zone, like nothing is safe,” she added, capturing the sense of vulnerability felt by many New Yorkers.
Official Statements and Ongoing Investigation
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly addressed the incidents in a post on X, confirming he had been briefed on what he described as “horrifying stabbings.” He emphasized that police are actively investigating the motive behind the attacks. “These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city,” Mamdani wrote, expressing relief that both victims were in stable condition.
Shomrim volunteers also reported seeing the suspect flee the scene. Jacobs credited the rapid police response with enabling officers to apprehend Morales quickly. “The police response was very, very quick, which was massively helpful in order to be able to catch him,” he said.
