US Ebola Quarantine Facility in Kenya Suspended Amid Rising Opposition

US Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya – Kenya’s high court has temporarily halted the U.S. initiative to build an Ebola quarantine and treatment center in the country, which has yet to report any confirmed cases of the virus. The facility was intended to serve as a temporary holding area for Americans who might have been exposed to the deadly pathogen in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), over 1,500 miles away. The legal pause follows sharp criticism from Kenyan civil society groups, who accused the U.S. of applying a double standard by prioritizing American health over local concerns.

Outbreak in the DRC Sparks Controversy

The Ebola outbreak, which was officially declared on May 15, has infected over 1,000 people and caused at least 238 deaths, according to the DRC government. The strain responsible, Bundibugyo, is a rare variant for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists. This outbreak has also extended into Uganda, a neighboring country, where one fatality and seven confirmed cases have been reported. The spread of the virus across borders has intensified fears in Kenya, prompting legal and public backlash against the U.S. plan.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had emphasized earlier in the week that the country would “not allow any cases of Ebola to enter the United States,” a stance that drew sharp reactions from Kenyan health advocates. Critics argued that the facility would expose Kenyans to the virus while offering Americans preferential care. This sentiment was echoed by the Katiba Institute, a Kenyan civil society group focused on constitutional matters, which swiftly challenged the agreement in court.

Facility Location and Purpose

The proposed facility was set to be located at the Laikipia Airbase, approximately 125 miles north of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. Plans included additional biocontainment units to be installed later, according to a U.S. official. The facility aimed to quarantine American citizens infected or exposed to the virus in the DRC, enabling them to receive care without the risks of long-distance transport back to the U.S. A senior Trump administration official confirmed that the Kenyan government had approved the setup of a 50-bed quarantine unit, which was expected to open Friday.

Despite this, the plan faced immediate opposition from Kenyan doctors and U.S. officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC source noted that the facility’s purpose was to “provide access to high-quality care for Americans who would need to quickly get out of DRC and quarantine,” but concerns about its impact on Kenya’s healthcare system persisted. Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, secretary-general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), questioned the rationale behind the facility’s location, stating, “What makes the
