Two Killed in Mass Shooting at Toronto Latin Festival
Two killed in mass shooting at Canada’s largest Latin street festival in Toronto, police confirmed Saturday. The tragic incident left two people dead and four others seriously wounded during a violent confrontation that erupted among approximately 13,000 attendees at Salsa on St. Clair, the city’s premier Latin cultural celebration in midtown Toronto.
Toronto Police Service Deputy Chief Frank Barredo told reporters that six people total were struck by bullets during the exchange. Both victims who died were men, while the four wounded were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of serious injuries. Authorities believe multiple suspects remain at large following the chaotic events.
Targeted Gunfight Unfolds Among Festival Crowd
Investigators have established three separate crime scenes and recovered two firearms from the location. Deputy Chief Barredo emphasized that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active. He described the incident as a confrontation between two individuals who were specifically targeting one another.
“This seemed to be an exchange of gunfire between two individuals targeting each other,” Barredo explained, noting that the shooting “indiscriminately put vast numbers of people in danger.”
Video footage captured by CTV showed festivalgoers fleeing along sidewalks as yellow police tape restricted access to the area. Scores of black police SUVs and patrol vehicles, along with heavy-duty armored vehicles and ambulances, rushed toward the scene as the situation unfolded.
Witnesses Recall Terrifying Moments
Joanna Lavoie, a journalist covering the event for Canadian media outlet CP24, recounted how the atmosphere shifted dramatically once the gunshots began. She told CP24, which operates as a CNN affiliate, that she observed a woman who appeared to have been shot and was suffering from significant injuries.
“Everyone was just in disbelief and fear. It was a terrifying situation. We’re here to have fun … we didn’t expect anything like this to happen, and it was the last thing we expected,” Lavoie said.
Valerie Rodriguez, another attendee, shared her experience with the Associated Press. She was seated outside a restaurant when she heard screams and witnessed people running in panic. “A bunch of people … told us to lay down onto the floor,” she recalled.
Leaders Respond to Community Tragedy
Police secured the scene approximately one hour after the shooting commenced but continued to advise residents to avoid the area. The Salsa on St. Clair festival has been held annually for 22 years according to organizers, making it a longstanding tradition celebrating Latin culture in Toronto.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow issued a strong condemnation of the violence. “I will ensure Toronto Police have every resource they need to find those responsible, and they will keep working around the clock to get guns off our streets,” the mayor stated in a message posted on X. She described the incident as “a reckless, despicable act of violence at a crowded festival” and promised that authorities would work tirelessly to identify all suspects.
Both Mayor Chow and police officials are urging anyone who attended the festival and has video footage or relevant information to come forward and contact law enforcement.
Canada Faces Growing Gun Violence Concerns
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep concern in a public statement. “My prayers are with the families grieving their loved ones … and everyone who has been affected by this horrific event,” Carney wrote, noting that he is “horrified” by the deadly shooting at the busy Toronto festival.
While deadly gun violence occurs less frequently in Canada than in the United States, it continues to impact communities across the nation. Less than three weeks prior to this incident, the country experienced another devastating mass shooting in Montreal. During that event, a gunman opened fire in a public area, and a subsequent shootout with police resulted in two deaths. That tragedy marked the first time a Montreal police officer has been killed in the line of duty in twenty years.
The shooting occurred in a nation with considerably stronger gun legislation compared to the United States, where mass shootings remain relatively uncommon. Following Canada’s deadliest shooting in 2020 in Nova Scotia, where 22 people were killed, the federal government implemented substantial reforms including bans on assault-style weapons.
This report covers the latest developments as Toronto continues to mourn and investigate the tragic events that claimed two lives at its beloved Latin street festival.
