Anti-UK protests break out in Cyprus with chants of ‘British bases out’ after drone struck RAF Akrotiri
Anti-UK Protests Erupt in Cyprus After Drone Strike at RAF Akrotiri
Following a recent drone attack on RAF Akrotiri, citizens in Cyprus have taken to the streets, demanding the withdrawal of British military installations. Chants echoing through the air have targeted the UK’s strategic footprint on the island, intensifying public sentiment against its continued involvement.
Demonstrators Gather in Limassol
Protests in Limassol have grown louder in recent days, driven by the belief that the UK’s bases should be removed. The incident occurred just two days after US-Israeli strikes on Iran intensified, with locals accusing the UK of complicity in the broader conflict.
Video Footage Highlights Public Outcry
Footage shared online shows crowds holding signs and waving national flags during demonstrations. The visuals underscore the growing frustration, as citizens rally against what they see as an outdated presence that fuels regional tensions.
UK’s Military Presence in Cyprus
Britain maintains two sovereign base areas—Akrotiri and Dhekelia—on Cyprus, established in 1960. These bases have long served as critical hubs for Middle Eastern operations, including missions in Iraq and Libya. However, the recent attack has reignited debates about their role in entangling the island in distant conflicts.
Starmer’s Decision Sparks Criticism
Sir Keir Starmer’s authorization of US use of British bases for strikes against Iranian targets has drawn sharp criticism. Critics argue this decision highlights the UK’s alignment with foreign military actions, deepening distrust among Cypriot residents.
Residents’ Concerns and Criticism
“The bases are like unsinkable launchpads, allowing the UK to treat Cyprus as an aircraft carrier for its campaigns,” said Nico, an activist with Autonomy, Feminism, Ecology and Anti-Capitalism (AFOA).
“The UK’s response—moving personnel while withholding information from nearby communities—has upset many locals,” noted Melanie Steliou Nicolaou, an actress and TV presenter. “Now, people are finally seeing the truth in the warnings we’ve been hearing.”
Growing Fears of Escalation
The drone strike has raised concerns that Cyprus could become a more vulnerable target as tensions between Iran, Israel, and the US escalate. While the damage was minor and no casualties were reported, the event has amplified fears of potential future attacks.
Economic Impact of Flight Cancellations
Disruptions to air travel have affected Cyprus’s tourism sector, which contributes about 14% to the country’s GDP. With flights canceled and uncertainty mounting, the economic consequences of the unrest could be substantial.
UK Bolsters Drone Defences
In response, the UK Ministry of Defence announced plans to deploy a warship and two Wildcat helicopters to Cyprus. The move aims to reinforce the island’s aerial security amid heightened regional threats.
