British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again
British Teen Sky Brown Reclaims Skateboarding World Title
Sky Brown, a 17-year-old from the UK, has secured her second world championship in skateboarding, following her earlier triumph at age 14. The event, held in Brazil, saw her emerge victorious after a competitive showdown in Sao Paolo.
“This is an incredible achievement, and I’m truly grateful,” Brown shared, reflecting on her win with her father, Stewart Brown, a former skateboarder.
The competition faced delays on Sunday due to persistent rain and challenging weather, which disrupted the planned schedule. Despite the conditions, the organizers opted to finalize the results after two runs, citing safety concerns for the skaters.
Officials declared Brown the champion, with her score of 88.16 securing the top spot. Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa claimed silver, finishing just behind Brown with 84.36 points, while American Minna Stess took bronze at 83.90.
Brown’s victory holds special significance as it coincided with International Women’s Day. She emphasized the broader context of global issues, stating, “There are bigger things, and I just pray for peace for the world.”
The 15-year-old Japanese competitor, Mizuho Hasegawa, who ranks first in the world, embraced Brown after the ceremony. Brown, now ranked seventh, has a history of remarkable milestones, including becoming Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist at 13 with a bronze in Tokyo 2020.
At just 13, she earned a bronze in the Tokyo Games, and later, in Paris 2024, she added another bronze in the park event—shortly after dislocating her shoulder. Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to a British father, Stewart Brown, and a Japanese mother, Mieko, Brown began competing internationally at the age of eight in the US Open.
Brown’s journey with Great Britain started in 2018, and her recent success underscores her dedication to the sport. Skateboarding, one of four new Olympic disciplines introduced in 2020, features events in both park and street formats.
