Disruption hits power link between Finland and Sweden
Finland’s national grid operator confirmed an unexpected power outage affecting the Fenno-Skan 2 submarine cable, which connects the country to Sweden. The incident lasted several hours but was resolved by midday Tuesday, restoring the flow of electricity between the two Nordic nations.
Technical malfunction triggers brief blackout
The disruption occurred early Tuesday morning and impacted the 800-megawatt high-voltage cable. Fingrid, Finland’s grid operator, noted that the undersea cable itself showed no visible damage. A spokesperson for the company explained the issue stemmed from a substation malfunction, which temporarily severed the connection.
Fingrid stated that the affected equipment had been thoroughly examined and that the power link was successfully reestablished, with full commercial operations resuming shortly after noon.
The Baltic Sea region has been under heightened vigilance since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, following multiple incidents of power and telecom cables being cut. Officials in neighboring states have launched inquiries into possible sabotage, citing concerns over Moscow’s “shadow fleet”—a network of unregistered oil tankers used to bypass Western sanctions.
Last month, Finnish authorities detained two individuals on a cargo vessel linked to damage inflicted on an undersea cable between Helsinki and Tallinn, Estonia. This incident underscores growing fears of targeted disruptions in the region. The situation remains under review as the story continues to unfold.
