Influencer caught smuggling £150,000 of cannabis back from Thailand
A social media influencer attempted to bring over £150,000 worth of cannabis into the UK via Edinburgh Airport, leading to a potential jail sentence.
Ellie Crampsie, 23, from Broomhouse, Glasgow, was arrested after authorities discovered more than 17kg of the drug in her luggage upon her return from a trip to Thailand last year. She admitted her involvement in the supply of cannabis during a hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on March 26.
Crampsie, who owns a beauty business and hosts events for thousands of followers, was stopped by Border Force officers in April. The incident occurred as she traveled from Thailand to Edinburgh through Paris. Prosecutors highlighted that she confirmed her travel itinerary without hesitation during the inspection.
“She was asked the usual questions by the officer and she confirmed she had travelled from Thailand,” said Emma Laing, the prosecutor.
The court learned that 17 individual sealed cannabis packages were found in her suitcase, valued between £115,000 and £151,000. Her defense attorney emphasized the support of her parents, who attended the proceedings.
Sheriff Graeme Watson postponed sentencing to gather a criminal justice social work report and a liberty restriction assessment. “That should be no prejudgment of what comes next, all sentencing options will be open to me on the next occasion, do you understand that?” he remarked.
Crampsie’s case mirrors that of a 22-year-old mother who escaped prison after smuggling £285,000 of cannabis into the UK from Thailand. Poppie Kudieersky claimed traffickers threatened her child’s life unless she agreed to act as a drug courier. She was detained at Manchester Airport when customs officers seized two suitcases containing 28.5kg of cannabis from her companion.
