Two Dead, 11 Hurt After Pickup Enters Wichita Youth Soccer Field

Authorities said the injured victims suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. A 34-year-old woman was taken into custody after the vehicle crossed through the complex. Her child was participating in a soccer game on another field, police said. Two juveniles were also inside the vehicle at the time. Investigators said the woman has cooperated with their inquiry, but the cause of the incident and the possibility of criminal charges remained unresolved Saturday evening.

Families Describe Chaos at the Complex

Witnesses described a fast-moving and frightening scene as a black pickup truck mounted a curb and traveled onto the playing area. The complex serves numerous youth teams, meaning families, coaches and children were present across several fields when the vehicle entered the area.

Vanessa Trammell had been attending her 13-year-old son’s game nearby. She said she watched the truck cross a neighboring field and strike several people. Her son’s game had just concluded, and the players were gathered near the sideline in a team huddle when the vehicle came close to that area.

“We thought it was going to stop but then it like kept going,”

Trammell said the scene immediately became overwhelming as people tried to understand what had happened and locate loved ones. Her son’s coach went toward the impacted area to assist victims before paramedics arrived, she said.

“It was pure panic,”

Trammell said.

“I didn’t know what was going on – just that people were being hit. I’m pretty sure I probably screamed, but, absolutely, just pure panic was going through me.”

She noted that younger children regularly use the fields, including the field where the truck traveled. Her attention in the first moments was on finding her own son amid the confusion.

“I don’t know if people tried to stop it or what happened. I was a little more focused on the chaos and trying to find my son first,”

she said.

Investigation Focuses on Access to Field

Police are examining how the vehicle got through the entrance to the field area and how quickly it was moving. The soccer facility is enclosed by fencing and includes a concrete route connecting the playing areas with a parking lot. Authorities had not determined how the truck passed the gate.

Investigators also asked members of the public to share any video recorded at the complex. Footage from spectators, nearby vehicles or phones could help establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision and clarify the vehicle’s path across the grounds.

Emergency crews and law enforcement converged on the complex as families gathered near police tape and emergency vehicles. Video from the scene showed children in red athletic uniforms standing close to the response area while officials secured the grounds.

Police planned an additional Saturday evening briefing as the investigation continued. Authorities were still determining which soccer clubs had been playing on the affected field when the vehicle entered it.

Sports Events Suspended

Stryker Sports Complex canceled all events until further notice after the incident. The facility asked the community to keep the victims, injured people and affected families in their thoughts during an exceptionally difficult time.

The complex hosts recreational and competitive soccer programs for a broad range of players, from under-5 groups to high school participants. Adult leagues also use the site, which has 11 outdoor turf fields and an indoor facility. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was heartbroken by the tragedy and urged people to stay away from the area while the response remained underway. She emphasized the impact on children and families who had come to the complex for weekend sports.
