The final witness was Dr. Gregory Saathoff, an FBI psychiatrist retained by the prosecution. His testimony centered on whether Clancy retained the mental capacity to distinguish right from wrong and to govern her own conduct at the moment she killed her three young children. He pointed to what he called “preparatory planning” — a sequence of deliberate steps including internet searches conducted on her phone, calculations of the distance between the family home and a nearby restaurant, and the precise timing of the killings to coincide with her husband’s absence from the house.

“The fact that this was done without any witness present during a time where she had asked a potential witness to go on a longer errand – also I thought was significant,” Dr. Saathoff told the court.

The Charges and the Central Legal Question

Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor-and-delivery nurse, faces three counts of murder for the deaths of her children Cora, age 5; Dawson, age 3; and Callan, who was just 8 months old. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Depending on a ruling the judge is expected to issue, the jury may also weigh involuntary manslaughter counts.

The pivotal question before the twelve jurors is whether Clancy was “criminally responsible” — a legal standard requiring that she understood the wrongfulness of her acts and possessed the ability to conform her behavior to the law. Prosecutors, who called more than 70 witnesses over the course of the trial, argued she “acted intentionally, rationally and swiftly” when she killed her children. They emphasized that she dispatched her husband on errands before the killings and that, upon waking in a hospital bed afterward, she appeared “horrified” and immediately requested an attorney.

Her defense team, which presented 10 witnesses, painted a different picture: that of a devoted mother consumed by postpartum psychosis. In the months preceding January 2023, Clancy had been prescribed more than a dozen psychiatric medications and had voluntarily checked herself into hospitals multiple times to treat depression, anxiety, insomnia, and suicidal ideation. She did not take the stand herself.

The Day of the Killings

Both sides agree on the mechanics of what happened at the family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on January 24, 2023. Clancy fatally strangled her three children using exercise resistance bands. She then cut her own wrists and neck and jumped from a window. Her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, had been asked to pick up takeout food and medicine that morning. When he returned, he found his wife lying in the backyard covered in blood and his children in the basement with the bands still around their necks.

“She killed the f**king kids!” he reportedly told a first responder at the scene.

Patrick Clancy was also the trial’s first witness. He described a downward spiral that began in September 2022, as Lindsay prepared to leave the children and resume work as a nurse. He recalled how difficult separations had become.

“She just had a really hard time being separated from them,” Patrick Clancy testified.

Her mental-health crises intensified in late 2022, particularly after she began taking Zoloft in October. She experienced intrusive thoughts and checked herself into a hospital that December, then into another over the New Year’s period. In a note saved on her phone, she wrote:

“Medication stole my motherhood and my life.”

Yet her treating physicians testified that she had no suicide plan, no thoughts of harming others, and showed no clinical signs of psychosis. The day before the killings, she met with her psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Tufts, who testified that Clancy “said she was doing all right.”

Aftermath and What Comes Next

Roughly a week after the killings, Lindsay Clancy called her ex-husband from a hospital and told him she had heard a voice. She did not discuss the children, Patrick Clancy said.

Psychiatric experts on both sides of the case described the killings as “altruistic filicide” — a term used when a parent kills a child motivated by love rather than hatred. The trial has drawn renewed public attention to the severity and complexity of postpartum mental illness, a condition that affects roughly one in five new mothers and carries a stigma that often delays diagnosis and treatment.

Clancy remains partially paralyzed as a result of her suicide attempt and is being held at Tewksbury Hospital. If convicted of murder, she faces a life sentence. If the jury accepts the insanity defense, the court will initiate proceedings to commit her to a state mental-health facility rather than a prison.
