President Donald Trump played a central role in securing Gilman’s freedom. The President confirmed he had personally spoken with both Gilman and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the case. In a message posted to Truth Social, Trump explained that Russia agreed to release the Marine veteran primarily on humanitarian grounds.

A United States official later confirmed that President Putin formally approved a pardon for Gilman. Notably, Russian authorities requested nothing in return for the release, distinguishing this case from other prisoner exchanges that have occurred between the two nations.

“After my discussions with President Vladimir Putin, Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Tuesday.

Kirill Dmitriev, serving as a special envoy to the Kremlin and heading the Russian sovereign wealth fund, independently confirmed Tuesday that Gilman’s freedom came through humanitarian channels. The exact timing of Trump and Putin’s conversation remains unclear.

Welcome Home and Medical Treatment Ahead

Upon landing at the Washington area airport, Gilman was greeted by Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and national security aide Seb Gorka. Both officials shared photographs showing Gilman alongside his mother, all wearing hats bearing the President’s campaign slogan.

“Robert is a patriot — a former United States Marine who served our country with honor. He can now finally return to his family and receive the medical care he needs,” Witkoff said.

Gorka noted on social media that Gilman had been presented with cheeseburgers and milkshakes upon his arrival—a detail that connected to a request the Marine had made during his conversation with President Trump. The President had mentioned that Gilman’s sole wish upon returning home was to enjoy a quality cheeseburger.

Following his airport welcome, Gilman traveled to a military hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Global Reach announced that the facility would provide comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation and treatment. This location has served as a primary care center for numerous Americans designated as wrongful detainees who have been released from foreign imprisonment.

Context and Ongoing Concerns

Gilman’s arrest occurred in January 2022 when Russian authorities claimed he was intoxicated and became involved in a confrontation with a police officer. Lebson disputed this narrative, explaining that Gilman was struck by law enforcement, became ill, and accidentally kicked the officer during the incident. A Russian court subsequently sentenced him to four and a half years in prison.

“There is no other reason that Robert is alive today other than that President Trump heard about the case and took action,” said Gilman’s sister, Lexie Hudson.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the release but emphasized that the administration continues pursuing the freedom of other Americans held unjustly abroad. Among those still detained are Stephen Hubbard, Andre Khachatoorian, Olga Jezler, Chuck Zimmerman, and David Barnes. Gilman joins fellow former Marines Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan in the growing list of American service members imprisoned in Russia.

Lebson cautioned that determining Gilman’s long-term medical prognosis requires additional time. His sister Hudson expressed hope for future reunions, noting she had been unable to communicate with her brother since his detention began.

“Our Marine is safely back on American soil,” Gorka wrote on X, adding Gilman was presented with “cheese burgers and milkshakes.”
