Trump announced Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland. He described it as a deal granting the United States “permanent control” over Greenland’s security while preventing American adversaries from establishing a military foothold or making sensitive investments there without US approval.

“The United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. There will be NO COST to the United States!”

In his statement, Trump characterized the proposed framework as an “Infinite Life” Agreement. He also said the United States would move quickly to build what he called a large military presence and would work with Greenland’s people on development and construction.

Signing Expected During UN General Assembly

Officials from the United States, Denmark and Greenland are expected to sign an agreement next week during the UN General Assembly centered on strengthened security across the Arctic and North Atlantic area.

The expected deal remains subject to parliamentary procedures after it is signed. That means the agreement’s political and legal path is not yet complete, even as the three parties signal broad support for closer coordination.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the prospect of an agreement, presenting it as beneficial not only to Greenland and Denmark but also to the United States and the wider NATO alliance.

“I am glad that we are about to make a great agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States,” Frederiksen said.

She added that the arrangement would be positive for NATO and Europe. Frederiksen also stressed that it acknowledges the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, while protecting Greenlanders’ right to determine their own future.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement reflects Greenland’s interests and its role in international cooperation.

“The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in the international cooperation,” Nielsen said. “It is to the benefit of us all.”
