Two Met PCs Charged Over Death of Pregnant Woman
Collision on A20 Leads to Criminal Charges
A collision involving an unmarked police car in south-east London has resulted in two Metropolitan Police officers being charged. The incident, which occurred on the A20 near the Kidbrooke Park junction on 17 October 2024, claimed the lives of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child. The 38-year-old driver died at the scene before succumbing to her injuries in hospital.
Officers Face Dangerous Driving Allegations
PC Chris Johnson is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins faces a separate charge of dangerous driving. The independent police conduct office (IOPC) concluded its investigation last October, linking Tomkins’ alleged driving conduct to the incident. Johnson was operating the vehicle involved in the crash, and Tomkins was in a second car at the time.
Both officers are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May. The IOPC emphasized that its probe was comprehensive, involving complex analysis of the events leading to the tragedy. Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham stated:
“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident. The IOPC have conducted a thorough and complex investigation, and we have worked closely with them as their inquiries have progressed. It is important that nothing is said that could prejudice the court proceedings that will now follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
