Just after 6 p.m., a female voice inside the home placed a 911 call. O’Donnell said he could not confirm who made the call, but Mercer later identified the caller as 12-year-old Charlotte, who attempted to alert authorities to save her family.

The first officers on scene confronted Smith at the doorway. He turned and ran back inside. Gunfire followed, and smoke became visible from the structure. Smith then fled into the backyard, where he shot himself. The house rapidly filled with flames.
