It appears that they may have lost an engine and ejected… but we do see a lot of black smoke, which we believe is the ejected F-16.

The pilot was transported to a local hospital. Authorities said no other people were hurt in the immediate crash, though the emergency response later brought a separate health concern for personnel working near the wreckage.

Hydrazine exposure concern affects first responders

Several first responders received treatment after possible contact with hazardous chemicals associated with the crash. Michigan State Police said Friday morning that some personnel remained under hospital care, but those still being treated were expected to leave the hospital later that day.

Munson Medical Center set up an outdoor treatment location to assess and decontaminate patients who may have been exposed to hydrazine. The chemical is used in the F-16’s emergency power system and is highly toxic. Exposure can lead to coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, making prompt decontamination an important precaution after an aircraft accident involving the substance.

Emergency officials ordered homes and businesses within one mile of the crash area to evacuate because of a hazardous chemical spill tied to the downed jet. Most residents were permitted to return by 10 p.m. Thursday after the immediate danger had eased.

Witnesses saw fireball near homes

Video from the area showed flames erupting in a field beside homes, followed by a broad plume of dark smoke. The crash occurred in a rural community about 130 miles north of Grand Rapids.

Shellie Doornbos and her husband were returning from errands when they witnessed the explosion. She said they heard additional blasts as they drove away and asked a police officer what they were hearing.

We could hear explosions coming from the fire and asked a police officer what it was we were hearing as we were driving away, and he told us it was a fighter jet crash and the explosions were ammunition.

The dramatic images underscored how rapidly an aircraft emergency can become a community safety issue, even when the pilot successfully escapes.
