Pittsburgh pediatrician killed after overnight home invasion; wife remains hospitalized

Earthguardiansonline.com – A Pittsburgh family was torn apart early Thursday when an intruder entered their home and attacked a pediatric critical care physician and his wife as they slept, authorities said. Dr. Idris Evans, 46, died after the assault, while his wife suffered critical injuries and was later listed in stable condition in the hospital.

Police have identified the suspect as Elijah Hemingway, 32. He faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault and burglary. As of Saturday afternoon, he had not yet been arraigned. Investigators are still trying to determine why the couple was targeted and whether Hemingway had any previous connection to Evans.

Children escaped to safety

The attack occurred after midnight at the Evans family home. Investigators believe Hemingway got inside through a rear window, then made his way to the third-floor bedroom where the couple was sleeping.

Evans and his wife awoke as they were being stabbed and attempted to resist, court documents state. During the struggle, the mother told the couple’s two children, ages 8 and 12, to run to a neighbor’s home. Both children escaped safely.

Despite sustaining multiple stab wounds, Evans’ wife made it to a nearby house for help. Emergency crews found Evans badly wounded on the bedroom floor. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hemingway left through a rear door after the attack. A police canine unit later located him in a neighboring backyard, where investigators say he had been hiding.

Questions about motive remain

Authorities have not announced a motive. Evans’ wife told investigators that Hemingway asked for her car keys, though police said there was no indication that he tried to take the family vehicle.

She also recalled the attacker making several statements involving “God” and saying that he was “God.” The criminal complaint says Evans addressed the man as “Elijah” during the incident, although his wife said she did not recognize the suspect.

Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said it was unclear whether Hemingway gave his name before Evans used it. That detail remains part of the broader inquiry into whether the suspect knew the physician or had encountered him before.

“God”

The wife’s identity has not been released by officials. By Saturday, police said she remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Additional charges tied to alleged sexual assault

While detectives were investigating the killing and attempted killing, they were contacted by police in Wilkinsburg about an alleged sexual assault reported from Wednesday morning. Wilkinsburg is only minutes from the Evans residence.

A woman told investigators that she was walking toward an alley when an unknown man sexually assaulted her. Detectives said evidence recovered during their work linked Hemingway to that alleged attack. The victim’s cellphone, which had been reported stolen, was also found.

Hemingway now faces further charges that include rape, sexual assault and robbery in connection with the Wilkinsburg case.

The filing of the additional charges places two serious alleged crimes within a short period and a small geographic area. Investigators have not publicly described any connection between the alleged sexual assault and the attack on the Evans family beyond the charges against the same suspect.

Prior cases in Pennsylvania and Florida

Pennsylvania court records show Hemingway has faced criminal charges in Allegheny County dating to 2016. In July, he was arrested in a burglary and theft case and was free on nonmonetary bail. A hearing in that matter is scheduled for October 1.

His prior record in Allegheny County includes disorderly conduct and traffic-related offenses.

Hemingway was also arrested in Florida in two separate battery-related incidents last year. In March 2025, authorities in Deltona arrested him on a domestic battery allegation after an argument with an ex-girlfriend with whom he lived. Court records show he entered a no-contest plea, though the final outcome of that case was not immediately clear.

The following month, police arrested Hemingway after an incident at a Wells Fargo branch in Deltona. A police affidavit described Hemingway yelling at bank employees before he punched, pushed and kicked Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies. One deputy said Hemingway repeatedly referred to himself as the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

He later pleaded no contest to three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and to resisting arrest. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said he received credit for time served after being held involuntarily for mental health treatment until he was found competent to proceed with the criminal case.

A physician’s death leaves a family and community grieving

Evans worked as a pediatric critical care physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Physicians in pediatric critical care treat children with severe or life-threatening illnesses and injuries, often in intensive care settings.

His death has brought particular attention to the children who escaped the home and to his wife’s recovery. The criminal case is expected to address the circumstances of the break-in, the fatal attack, the alleged Wilkinsburg assault and the unanswered question at the center of the investigation: why the Evans family was attacked.
